Helsinki, Finland

Another great place! A beautiful city with lots of trees and water, and a lively city center. It was unfortunate that we only had 7 hours here, but we got our money’s worth. We talk a lot about a “vibe” of a city, and we both really liked the vibe of Helsinki. There were lots of cafes and restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk, and the sidewalks were wide so there was plenty of room. There are only really 2 months of summer though, so they have to make the most of it.

It’s really strange how it doesn’t get totally dark here. We keep waking up at all hours and it’s light outside. It’s going to be very nice to be home and to sleep in the dark!

I don’t have a ton of pictures because we just didn’t have a lot of time, but here they are.

Some buildings around town. In some you can see the all the people on the street and sitting at the cafes.

Some statues around town. The third one is a monument built for a famous composer.

Suomenlinna is an old fort that was turned into a prison that is now a tourist attraction. It was built on an island and we took a ferry out to it. We only had about 30 minutes out there because we didn’t want to miss our boat, but it was really interesting. We got to see some old cells where prisoners were held during the revolution before they were executed. It was a bit disturbing, but really amazing. The church in the pics was built as a military church but is now a Lutheran church. The wall is the wall of the fort; you can see the holes for the guns.

And here are some random pics.

And that does it for Helsinki! On to our last stop, Stockholm. This is another place where we just have a short amount of time, so we are hoping we can fit enough into our day.
