Yesterday we landed in the German port of Warnemunde. We had originally planned to take the 3 hour train ride to Berlin for the day, but we were pretty tired and decided to stay in port. And we are glad we did! We would have missed a really cool little town had we gone to Berlin. We also figured we’d be back to Europe at some point and we could hit Berlin then, but getting to Warnemunde a second time would be more difficult.
When we first got off the ship we were a bit disappointed. But we always feel that way as soon as we get off a ship because the ports themselves are always pretty run down and full of “working men.” But as soon as we got past the initial port area, we came to a beautiful canal with lots of shops, restaurants, and bars – our 3 favorite things and not necessarily in that order. All the houses were colorful, old, and very cute. The beach was beautiful (we found several dead jellyfish and saw plenty of old, naked, folks, but it was still beautiful), and the town had a really interesting charm. We walked (yet another 10 miles…) all day and discovered some really awesome backstreets, mostly all cobblestone. And to top it off, we found two little, purple starfish on the beach. We are going to smuggle them back to the US, so hopefully no customs folks are reading this…
I’m just going to post a bunch of pics because we took a lot and these should give a good feel of what the town looked like.
